Ritonavir + Lopinavir is a combination of two anti-HIV medicines: Ritonavir and Lopinavir. They work by interfering with an enzyme (protease), which is required by HIV-infected cells to make new viruses. This stops the production of new viruses.
Key Benefits
- Used as part of combination therapy for HIV infection
- Helps reduce HIV multiplication in the body
- Supports lowering of viral load
- Helps maintain immune system function
- Provides complementary antiretroviral activity
- Supports long-term management of HIV when taken consistently
How It Works
Lopinavir blocks HIV protease, an enzyme needed for the virus to produce mature and infectious viral particles. Ritonavir also inhibits HIV protease but is primarily used in this combination to slow the breakdown of Lopinavir, helping maintain effective levels of Lopinavir in the body.
How to Use
- Take Ritonavir + Lopinavir exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Take it with food if instructed for your particular formulation.
- Take the medicine at the same time each day to maintain consistent treatment.
- Do not skip doses, as inconsistent treatment can reduce effectiveness and increase the risk of resistance.
- Avoid driving or operating machinery if you experience dizziness or sleepiness.
- Do not change the dose or stop treatment without consulting your doctor.
Important Information
Common side effects may include taste changes, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and peripheral neuropathy such as tingling or numbness in the hands and feet. Treatment may also cause increased liver enzymes and changes in blood lipid levels.
Your doctor may regularly monitor liver function, kidney function, blood lipids, and other relevant health parameters during treatment. Inform your doctor if you develop persistent abdominal pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe dizziness, or unusual numbness or tingling.
Ritonavir can interact with many other medicines, so inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are taking. This medicine does not cure HIV. Continue your complete HIV treatment as prescribed and do not stop Ritonavir + Lopinavir without medical advice.
